Chennai: Residents seeking new water and sewer connections must apply and pay online, Metrowater has said.Applications can be registered on the Metrowater website, with supporting documents uploaded and digital payment. Officials will inspect and verify applications, which will be processed within 15 days. Field work for connections will start after approval, officials said.The move comes as Metrowater expands water supply and underground sewerage facilities in the city’s newly added areas. Officials said water supply is available in parts of Manali, Madhavaram, Valasaravakkam and Alandur zones. Treated water is being supplied in parts of Perungudi and Sholinganallur. “Amid criticism of Metrowater services in the added areas, we are promoting online registration to improve transparency and make the process more convenient for residents,” an official said.Applicants must submit GCC property-tax assessment details, planning and building permissions from CMDA or GCC, where applicable, along with the building completion certificate and proof of Infrastructure Development Charges (IDC) payment to CMDA, GCC or Metrowater. A rainwater-harvesting undertaking is mandatory. Buildings without a property-tax assessment will be charged an advance fee of ₹3,000 per Equivalent Dwelling Unit (EDU).For individual houses up to 500 sqft, water and sewerage connections cost ₹100 each. The charge is ₹5,000 each for houses above 500 sqft and up to 100 sqm, and ₹7,500 per EDU each for buildings between 100 sq m and 200 sqm. Apartment units up to 200 sqm and commercial buildings are charged ₹7,500 each per EDU for water and sewerage, with commercial rates varying by establishment type and floor area. Road-cutting, pipe-laying and water-meter installation charges will be levied separately. An instalment option for Below Poverty Line households to pay ₹100 as the connection fee has also been provided.
