Schools are encouraged to design contextual and experiential learning environments that connect knowledge with real-life application, supporting students in becoming autonomous, responsible, and future-ready citizens

Nagpur: CBSE and NCERT on Thursday jointly released the secondary curriculum for 2026-27 academic session in New Delhi, introducing a comprehensive restructured framework for Class 9 aligned with the National Curriculum Framework for School Education (NCFSE) 2023.

There was still no word from NCERT on exactly when Class 9 textbooks will be available, but with curriculum now available online, schools are now preparing to teach topic concepts till books arrive. New curriculum for Class 10 takes effect from the next academic session (2027-28).

The new framework organises learning across eight curricular areas – languages, mathematics, science, social science, art education, physical education and well-being, vocational education, and interdisciplinary areas. The secondary school under the new design is envisioned as a learner-centred space where students build self-concept, resilience, enterprise, sportspersonship, and aesthetic sensibility.

Schools are encouraged to design contextual and experiential learning environments that connect knowledge with real-life application, supporting students in becoming autonomous, responsible, and future-ready citizens.

Under the revised language policy, students in Classes 9 and 10 will study three languages. The framework offers Hindi, English, and 42 other languages, covering all scheduled languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution of India, in addition to other Indian regional languages and foreign languages. Languages chosen at the two required levels must be different – the same language cannot be offered at more than one level simultaneously. The language curricula focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, developing effective proficiencies across all four areas. Language education at the secondary stage is guided by the stage-wise design and learning standards of the NCFSE 2023.Mathematics education under the new framework builds strong conceptual foundations in number systems, algebra, geometry, mensuration, statistics, and probability. The curriculum treats mathematics not merely as a set of procedures but as a disciplined way of thinking that fosters rationality, logical reasoning, and problem-solving ability.

Learners are expected to recognise patterns, understand relationships, and model real-world situations using quantitative and abstract tools. The curriculum encourages students to formulate problems, choose suitable strategies, analyse results, and communicate mathematical ideas with clarity. Connections with science, technology, economics, and everyday life are emphasised to make learning meaningful and relevant.

Science instruction spans physics, chemistry, and biology, with the focus placed on deep conceptual understanding rather than accumulation of facts. Students will be expected to ask meaningful questions, design and interpret investigations, analyse data, and evaluate scientific claims. The curriculum requires students to apply scientific knowledge to issues related to health, environment, sustainability, and technology, connecting classroom learning with real-world contexts. Science education under the framework is aimed at supporting rational thought, informed decision-making, and responsible citizenship.

Social science covers history, geography, political science, and economics. The curriculum aims to develop informed, reflective, and responsible citizens through rational inquiry, ethical reasoning, constitutional values, and democratic participation. Learners are expected to engage with disciplinary methods such as interpretation of historical sources, spatial and environmental analysis, understanding of political institutions, and economic reasoning. The curriculum connects local contexts with national and global developments and places emphasis on fundamental rights, duties, and civic responsibilities.
