Udupi: A surprise inspection by the Karnataka Upa Lokayukta at the senior sub-registrar’s office in Udupi taluk exposed alleged illegal handling of public property and marriage registration files by outsourced staff, following which a criminal case was registered at the Udupi Town police station.The complainant, Halamurthy Rao VS, DSP, Karnataka Lokayukta, Udupi, stated that the Upa Lokayukta conducted a surprise visit to the office of the senior sub-registrar located at the taluk office complex in Bannanje village, Moodanidambur, on Friday. During the inspection, it was found that Sukesh, an outsourced staff member working at the office, kept eight files in his personal bag, while another outsourced staff member, Sunil, kept 35 files in his personal bag. In total, 43 files related to property and marriage registrations submitted by the public were found in their personal bags without being entered in the office inward register. By doing so, the accused engaged in criminal misconduct and misuse of the law. They also allegedly behaved like govt officials while dealing with members of the public. Despite these irregularities, sub-registrar, Girish, failed to take notice of these activities. It was observed that Sukesh and Sunil carried out these acts with his knowledge and support. In this connection, a case was registered at Udupi Town police station under Crime No 32/2026, under sections 316(4), 337, 340, 344, 204 read with 3(5) of the BNS.
