Thiruvananthapuram: Two young women athletes were injured, one of them critically, after a car allegedly carrying United Democratic Front (UDF) workers hit them on Asramam Link Road in Kollam on Tuesday evening, police said. The accident occurred shortly after the public campaign ended at 6pm. Police said the vehicle was returning from a campaign event when it struck the pedestrians. The injured women, both sportswomen, were rushed to a nearby hospital and are undergoing treatment. Hospital sources said one of them remains in a serious condition.Police said the car involved in the accident is owned by the son of Congress leader and UDF candidate in Kollam, Bindu Krishna. However, the officers clarified that he was not in the vehicle at the time of the incident. The driver, identified as Devanand, has been taken into custody. Three other individuals were also in the car when the accident occurred, police said. A case has been registered and further investigation is underway.Meanwhile, Krishna accused the ruling CPM of politicising the incident and attempting to link her son to the accident. Calling it unfortunate, she said those in the vehicle were activists of the Kerala Students Union, the student wing of the Congress party. “The driver is a close friend of my son and also the son of a CPM leader in Thiruvananthapuram. Despite this, the CPM is trying to politicise the accident ahead of the election,” she said. The UDF candidate also alleged that a false campaign was being spread against her and her family on social media.
