Chennai: A 21-year-old suspect in a burglary case died after falling from a third-floor terrace in Venbakkam near Ponneri early Friday. His leg got entangled in a mosquito net and later snagged on a wire as he tried to jump and flee a house.The deceased was identified as Bhaskar, a resident of Rettipalayam near Minjur. Ponneri police said he broke into the house of Malayappan, a road contractor, who was staying alone in a single-room accommodation built on the third-floor terrace of a building on Ponniamman Koil Street.Bhaskar gained access to the terrace around midnight through the main gate, which is usually left unlocked at night, the police said. He then entered the house through an open window and stole a wallet and a mobile phone belonging to Malayappan.While attempting to escape, Bhaskar’s leg got entangled in a mosquito net, and Malayappan woke up due to the commotion. He spotted the intruder and raised the alarm. Bhaskar immediately fled towards the terrace and attempted to jump off the building. However, his leg got caught in a wire, causing him to lose balance and fall head first onto the concrete ground from the third floor. He sustained severe head injuries and died on the spot.Police rushed to the scene and sent the body to Ponneri govt hospital for postmortem. Investigations revealed that Bhaskar was involved in theft cases in Minjur and Kattur. Three mobile phones and cash were recovered from him.Police are analysing CCTV footage from the locality. Further probe is underway.
