Chandigarh: Two unidentified men allegedly robbed a Burail resident of his Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire at gunpoint right outside an unmanned police beat box in Sector 46 around 11.15 pm on Thursday. The complainant, Mohan, who runs a grocery shop near the police post, was loading inventory into his car when two men approached him. One held him at gunpoint with a pistol while the other seized the driver’s seat. Before the victim could react, the duo sped off in the stolen vehicle.Speaking to TOI, Mohan stated that he tried to chase the fleeing suspects with the help of a passerby but could not catch up, alleging that no police personnel were stationed at the beat box during the incident.Around 11.35 pm, a police patrolling team met Mohan and advised him to dial the emergency response number 112, following which a team from the Sector 34 police station arrived at the scene to record his statement.Police have launched a search and are analysing CCTV footage from nearby cameras to identify the carjackers and trace the stolen vehicle, which remained untraced until the time of reporting. The crime has exposed serious security gaps in night patrolling, marking the second major gunpoint carjacking in the city within a month—following the Sept 11 snatching of a Honda City in Manimajra, where police later arrested five accused and recovered the vehicle.
