MUMBAI: The Bombay High Court bench of justice Anil Kilor and justice SC Chandak on Monday refused to confirm the death sentences awarded to five men in the 2006 July 11 Mumbai train blasts case and acquitted all 12 accused.The judges set aside the September 30, 2015 judgment of the special MCOCA trial court, citing lack of evidence to uphold the guilty verdict. Know more about the judges who delivered the landmark verdict.Justice Anil KilorA Judge of the Bombay HC since August 23, 2019, Justice Kilor, a BCom, LLB, hails from Amravati in Vidharbha District and is due to retire in September 2028.He did LL.B from Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Law College of Nagpur University.From 1992, he worked with advocate Sanjay Jagtap.In 2000, he was appointed as an Asst. Government Pleader and Addl. Public Prosecutor for Government of Maharashtra at Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court. In the year 2005, he resigned and became the ‘A’ panel counsel for the State of Maharashtra.He appeared in more than 30 big Public Interest Litigation on pro bono basis and in 2017 was elected as President of High Court Bar Association, Nagpur.Justice SC ChandakJustice Chandak, became a Judge of Bombay HC on October 21, 2023, and is due to retire this October. Also from Amravati, as Justice Kilor, he completed L.L.B. in 1994 from Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Law College, Amravati. He was an Assistant Public Prosecutor since February 2002 at Judicial Magistrate First Class, Court at Anjangaon Surji, District Amaravati. In may 2008, he was appointed as Sessions Judge in Mumbai; and worked as District Judge in Nagpur, Beed, Goa; Principal District and Sessions Judge, Dhule; Registrar, (Personnel) High Court, Bombay and Prothonotary—the senior most administrative officer, at Bombay HC before his elevation as HC Judge. He was also the chairperson of Motor Accident Claims Tribunal, Mumbai and Presiding Officer, State Transport Appellate Tribunal, Maharashtra as well as the Principal District and Sessions Judge at Kolhapur and Pune earlier.
