Kanpur: A 24-year-old suspected member of a bike theft gang was arrested in an injured condition following an encounter with police in the Saurikh police station area of Kannauj district early Tuesday morning.The encounter took place near Harbhanpur Stadium, where police cordoned off the suspect while acting on surveillance and informer inputs.The accused was identified as Shyam Kashyap, a resident of Umrain village under the Airwa Katra police station area of Auraiya district.Police said a joint team from three police stations surrounded the suspect from all sides.The accused allegedly opened fire at the police and attempted to flee. In retaliatory firing, he sustained a bullet injury to his right leg, police said. He was taken to a community health centre (CHC) for treatment and was later referred to the Government Medical College.Circle Officer (CO) Suresh Malik said police were questioning him about his criminal history, other members of the gang, and incidents of mobile phone and bike theft in various districts.He added that efforts were being made to arrest the other members of the bike theft gang.
