Kanpur: In a late-night encounter on Monday near Mathurapur village in Ahirwan, Chakeri police arrested history-sheeter and Bichchu Gang kingpin Gaurav Jain, alias Abhishek Jain (35), after he sustained a bullet injury.Station house officer Ajay Prakash Mishra said that acting on a tip-off, police laid a cordon on the Ahirwan-Mathurapur road to apprehend Jain.Mishra said the accused fired at police personnel and attempted to flee. In retaliatory fire, Jain was shot in the leg, following which he was arrested and taken to a hospital.On Tuesday afternoon, police paraded the accused barefoot through Harjinder Nagar, Lal Bangla, Sabzi Mandi and Jagaipurwa after bringing him from Chakeri police station.During the procession, police also took Jain to his residence in Kalibadi, where a crowd gathered to catch a glimpse of him.With a bandaged leg, the accused was seen apologising and saying that he would not commit crimes in the future.According to police, Jain has several FIRs registered against him dating back to 2016. The cases include attempted murder, robbery, assault, and offences under the Gangster Act, Arms Act and other serious criminal charges.A few days ago, Jain allegedly assaulted Kashi Sonkar in Lal Bangla, leaving him critically injured, following which police intensified efforts to arrest him.DCP East Satyajit Gupta visited Kanshiram Hospital and interrogated the accused. He said Jain would also be booked under the Gangster Act.
