Bengaluru: Huge halls of Hard Rock Café — which offered live music and much more — across India have fallen silent. Bengaluru’s music lovers are mourning the loss of a space that defined the city’s nightlife and rock culture. The sudden end came after Hard Rock International terminated agreements with JSM Corporation and its affiliated entities, revoking their rights to operate Hard Rock Cafe outlets and Rock Shops across India.Hard Rock operated 10 cafes in the country — including three in Bengaluru and in Hyderabad, New Delhi, Pune and Chennai. “The Hard Rock Hotel in Goa will remain open and is not connected to this operator,” the company said in a statement Monday.Founded in 2004, JSM introduced global brands Hard Rock Cafe and California Pizza Kitchen to India, besides launching the upscale dining concept Shiro. Is it a goodbye forever? Nah. Sources told TOI that a new partner has been identified and the restaurants are likely to resume operations.Yet, memories started flooding in: It was at Hard Rock Cafe that thousands of Bengalureans had their several firsts: Proposal, underage drink, and introduction to rock music.A landmark near Anil Kumble Circle for two decades, the place was the favourite for rock music lovers. The 9,000sqft venue retained its colonial charm, while its interiors were adorned with music memorabilia. The space was divided into two main halls and an open courtyard that frequently hosted live performances.“This was the first truly ‘cool’ place I visited during my college days,” said Tejaswini Anjankumar, a fashion designer. “For our generation, it was a big part of our social life. I didn’t know much about rock music then; it was more about the aesthetic vibe and being at that one hot place everyone wanted to hang out.”The café offered handcrafted drinks and a menu that included classic American favourites, alongside local dishes. It also features an on-site Rock Shop where visitors could purchase branded merchandise and collectibles associated with the Hard Rock brand.Along with Hard Rock Café, other legends Purple Haze, Jimmy’s, Styx, Pecos and Downtown Pub helped shape Bengaluru’s reputation as India’s rock capital. When TOI reached out to JSM cofounder Sanjay Mahtani, he said, “You’ll hear from us soon.”BOXESVinay BV | Music enthusiastHard Rock Cafe brings back so many memories. I bunked college in Manipal just to come to Bengaluru for a concert and watch my favourite musician, Prem Joshua, perform. The rock scene has been declining for years, but memories of those gigs — Pink Floyd tributes, Judas Priest covers, local and international bands — were incredible. The name itself is iconic, which makes this even more heartbreaking. Abhishek Nagarkar | singerThe news brought back a flood of memories. I was first introduced to rock music at Hard Rock Cafe — not just as a customer, but also by hosting karaoke nights and performing there. I met so many people who later became close friends. The entire culture and vibe of the place is something I will deeply miss. Pannaga Bharana | film director and producerRock music and pop culture were deeply connected to old Bengaluru, and this place was one of the icons of that era. I grew up with it and have so many memories there — my first dates, celebrating when my first film was signed, and even my wife’s first birthday. It had a close-knit community, almost like a cult following, where everyone knew each other and came for the music —Meenakshi
