Gurgaon: A two-year-old girl playing outside her house died after a banker, allegedly speeding through a narrow internal colony road, ran over her while taking a sharp turn in Sector 5 on Monday night. Her four-year-old sister narrowly escaped being hit by the Volkswagen Taigun.The incident took place around 9pm, shortly after Adrija and her elder sister Chhavija had finished dinner and were playing outside their house. CCTV footage showed the car turning into the lane as the sisters sat and played on the road. Driver Nitin Yadav (31), who works with National Australia Bank as an analyst, failed to spot them, police said, and ran both the front and rear wheels over Adrija.Her mother Pooja was talking to another woman a short distance away when the car screeched into the lane. Chhavija managed to move out of its path as it approached. But Adrija suffered injuries to her nose and mouth and was rushed to Manipal Hospital in Palam Vihar, where doctors declared her dead.Nitin, who lives just four houses away in the same lane, stopped after the accident and took the family to hospital in the same car. He was later arrested from his house.The girl’s father, Virendra Tiwari, an IT engineer with Global Logic in Noida, alleged that Nitin was driving rashly and at high speed on the narrow internal road. He also alleged that the circumstances raised questions about whether the act was intentional and sought stringent action against him.“Our lives have been ruined by rash driving. He cannot drive like this on internal roads. He took the turn at such high speed that he did not even see my children. He could have killed both of them. Adrija would have turned two next month. We are in deep shock. I want the stringent punishment for him,” he told TOI.Tiwari, a native of Mahendergarh, said the family had moved into the rented house about a year ago after living elsewhere in the locality.Based on his complaint, a case was registered under sections 281 (rash driving) and 106 (causing death by negligence) of the BNS at Sector 5 police station. A police officer said Nitin was taken into custody around 3.30am from his house. “He earlier worked abroad and has recently shifted to the city,” the officer said.Police said they have initiated inquest proceedings. The child’s body was handed over to the family on Tuesday after an autopsy.
