Chikkamagaluru: With the monsoon bringing respite from the scorching summer, Ayurveda practitioners say the season offers more than just pleasant weather. According to traditional Ayurvedic wisdom, the rainy season is considered the ideal time for cleansing, rejuvenation and restoring the body’s natural balance.Ayurveda regards the monsoon as the most favourable period for therapeutic interventions, particularly Panchakarma, the classical detoxification and rejuvenation therapy.Dr P Keerthi, Ayurveda practitioner and assistant professor in department of Samhita Siddhanta at ALN Rao Memorial Ayurvedic Medical College, Koppa, said intense summer heat weakens the body’s strength (bala) and digestive fire (Agni). With the arrival of the rains, digestion tends to slow down, leading to the accumulation of metabolic toxins (ama). During this period, Vata dosha becomes aggravated while Pitta Dosha starts accumulating, increasing the likelihood of digestive ailments, joint pain, skin disorders, respiratory illnesses and reduced immunity.At the same time, the cool and humid weather creates favourable conditions for healing. The atmosphere softens the skin and opens the body’s channels (srotas), enabling medicated oils and herbal preparations to penetrate deeper and enhance therapeutic effects.Physicians often recommend Panchakarma during this season. More than a detox procedure, it is a comprehensive treatment aimed at eliminating toxins, balancing the doshas, improving digestion and strengthening the body’s natural healing mechanisms.The therapies are prescribed based on an individual’s constitution (Prakriti) and may include abhayanga (oil massage), svedana (herbal steam therapy), basti (medicated enema), virechana (therapeutic purgation) and nasya (nasal therapy), Dr Keerthi explained. “This is also the best time to manage chronic conditions such as arthritis, back pain, neurological disorders, stress-related illnesses and skin diseases. The humid climate helps reduce stiffness, while the therapies improve circulation and mobility,” she said.Ayurvedic practitioners also recommend Rasayana therapy following detoxification to boost immunity and help prevent seasonal infections. These principles are rooted in classical texts such as the Charaka Samhita and Ashtanga Hridaya, which advocate purification therapies during Varsha Ritu after the seasonal accumulation of doshas.However, experts caution that seasonal treatments alone cannot compensate for unhealthy lifestyles. Ayurveda emphasises the importance of following a seasonal regimen (ritucharya) and a daily routine (dinacharya), including regular exercise, a balanced diet, adequate sleep and effective stress management, for good health.“As the rains rejuvenate the earth, they also offer an opportunity for personal renewal. With proper guidance and disciplined daily habits, the monsoon can become a season of lasting wellness,” Dr Keerthi said.
