Prayagraj: In a significant academic update, Allahabad University has issued revised guidelines regarding the duration, extension and re-registration of PhD programmes, superseding its earlier notification dated Feb 20, 2024.The changes, approved by Vice-Chancellor Prof Sangeet Srivastava aim to streamline regulations for scholars enrolled both before and after Nov 7, 2022. As per the details shared by AU PRO Prof Jaya Kapoor, for the scholars enrolled prior to the implementation of the 2022 UGC regulations, AU will continue to follow its 2019 PhD regulations with updated provisions. Research scholars completing five years from enrolment may receive an extension up to six years upon approval by the departmental research committee (DPC). Those who have completed six years may be granted a one-time special extension by the research degree committee (RDC), based on DPC recommendation, extending up to seven years in exceptional cases.Women scholars and persons with disabilities (above 40%) are eligible for an additional special extension granted by the VC, allowing completion up to eight years. However, cases exceeding seven or eight years (where special permission was granted) will be treated as cancelled. Such candidates may opt for re-registration without appearing for CRET, submit fees and complete their thesis within 24 months. Re-registration is not permitted beyond nine years, or 10 years in the case of women and PwD scholars. Additionally, re-registered candidates must complete pre-PhD coursework if not already done. For scholars enrolled on or after Nov 7, 2022, the university will adhere to the University Grants Commission (UGC) 2022 regulations. The PhD duration is set between three to six years. After three years, scholars may receive a two-year extension through DPC, allowing completion within five years. A final one-year extension up to six years may be granted by RDC, with no further extensions permitted.Special provisions remain for women and PwD scholars, who may receive an additional extension up to eight years with VC’s approval. Cases exceeding the permissible duration will be cancelled, though re-registration without CRET is allowed under strict timelines. Women scholars are also entitled to maternity or childcare leave of up to 240 days during their programme, informs AU PRO.
