Prayagraj: In a relief for research scholars, Allahabad University has introduced a new provision allowing full-time PhD scholars to convert their enrolment to part-time if they secure a reputable job during the course of their research. The decision has been implemented with immediate effect and is expected to resolve a long-standing dilemma faced by scholars who had to choose between continuing their research and accepting career-defining job opportunities. For years, many doctoral candidates found themselves in a difficult position after being selected in competitive examinations conducted by the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) or UP Public Service Commission (UPPSC) and various state public service commissions. Until now, scholars who obtained such appointments were often compelled to discontinue their PhD midway due to the mandatory full-time requirement, leading to the loss of years of academic effort. Under the new policy, eligible scholars can apply to the university seeking conversion from full-time to part-time PhD mode. Applicants must clearly state their employment details and their intent to continue research alongside their job. The university will scrutinise each request, and permission will be granted if the justification is found appropriate. The administration has also laid down specific eligibility conditions. The employment must be in a govt or recognised institution with a minimum pay level of 10 or above. Scholars will be permitted to shift to part-time mode only after completing at least one year of research work along with the mandatory coursework.
