Prayagraj: Sangam city continued to sizzle under an intense heatwave on Monday as the maximum temperature shot up to 46.8°C, making it the second hottest place in the state after Banda, which recorded 47.6°C. The minimum temperature in the Sangam city was recorded at 28.6°C, offering little relief even during the night hours. The sharp spike became more alarming when compared to Sunday’s maximum of 44.5°C, showing a steep rise within 24 hours. The blazing sun and hot winds made it feel as if a giant blower was running across the roads, turning routine commuting into a punishing ordeal.Streets wore a deserted look during the afternoon as people avoided stepping out unless absolutely necessary. As almost all the schools are already closed for summer vacations, children remained indoors, but office-goers, vendors and daily commuters were left struggling in the oppressive heat. Two-wheeler riders were seen covering their faces with cotton cloth to shield themselves from the scorching heat. The sudden demand for cotton scarves and face covers has gone up noticeably in local markets. At major crossings, many social organisations and individuals have arranged stalls providing cold drinking water to passers-by for free. People were seen consuming cold drinks, bel sharbat, aam panna and lemon water to stay hydrated.Weather experts have warned that there is no immediate respite from the prevailing heatwave conditions for the entire week.Doctors have urged residents to remain cautious to avoid heatstroke and dehydration. Dr Jaiwardhan Rai advised parents to ensure children drink plenty of fluids. “Add a pinch of salt and sugar with a few drops of lemon in water bottles to prevent dehydration,” he suggested.Low humidity, which was as low as 17%, has worsened discomfort, making the heatwave even more unbearable.
