Faridabad: An assistant commandant of Assam Rifles was assaulted after an altercation outside a liquor shop in the city escalated into a brawl when the other group allegedly took offence at being called “Nepali”.Police said the incident took place on June 23 near Kirawali village. The paramilitary officer, a resident of Bisrakh (Noida), filed a complaint at Bhopani police station and a case was registered. Two suspects – Mohit (22) and Shubham (22) – were arrested. Five others are absconding. According to the assistant commandant, who is currently posted to Chandel in Manipur, he had gone to a Faridabad farmhouse with his friends to party. “My friend and I went to a nearby liquor shop to buy beer. We had just bought beer and sat in my car, a Innova, when a group of youths suddenly launched an attack on the vehicle, smashing its windows,” the assistant commandant said in his complaint. He said he stepped out of his car and asked the group why they were attacking.“They again attacked me and hurled bricks, stones, rods and other sharp weapons. My friend also got out of the car and they beat him up too,” he said. Police said that on questioning the accused, they said they were enraged when the paramilitary officer and his friend gestured towards their group and used the word “Nepali”. The group, which was drinking liquor outside the shop, then attacked the duo.“During preliminary questioning, the accused admitted that they were under the influence of alcohol and were provoked by the remark. They then used tiles and other objects to damage the vehicle and assault the victims before fleeing,” a Faridabad police spokesperson said on Wednesday. The assistant commandant alleged that the accused also snatched a gold chain he was wearing before escaping on motorcycles, scooters and an i20 car. “I sustained serious head injuries from the assault. These people should be dealt with as per the law,” he said.Investigators said Mohit belongs to Satna in Madhya Pradesh and Shubham is from Ayodhya, UP. “Both of them were living in Bhatta Colony in Faridabad’s Sector 39. Mohit is employed by a private firm, and Shubham is currently unemployed. They were produced before a local court and sent to judicial custody,” the spokesperson said.He added that police are working to identify and arrest the other five attackers who are among the seven charged under BNS sections.
