Gurgaon: In a first for Haryana, two hyena cubs, abandoned by their mother shortly after birth, were rescued and brought to full health by veterinary professionals at Pipli Zoo in Kurukshetra and Rohtak Zoo. The cubs, born on June 2, were found in critical condition but made a remarkable recovery, marking a significant achievement in wildlife conservation in the region. A female hyena at Pipli Zoo gave birth to two cubs. The mother abandoned her offspring, leaving the tiny cubs vulnerable and in dire straits. According to wildlife department officials, a departmental veterinary surgeon was immediately informed of their critical situation. He assessed the cubs and said both cubs were dehydrated and needed immediate treatment.Chief wildlife warden (Haryana) Vivek Saxena told TOI on Sunday, “The cubs were swiftly transported to Rohtak Zoo, where specialised care could be provided. At Rohtak Zoo, the veterinary doctor oversaw the intensive 24-hour care required to save the fragile cubs.” Saxena said, “Today, both cubs have returned to Pipli Zoo in completely healthy condition, a testament to the successful intervention and care they received. This successful intervention highlights the critical role of dedicated wildlife care in preserving species, especially those facing challenges in the wild.”Wildlife experts have hailed the hand-reared cubs’ rescue as a significant step in conservation. Sunil Harsana, a wildlife expert, said, “Hyenas are often misunderstood, but they play a vital role in maintaining ecological balance. Every life saved is a step toward preserving biodiversity. These cubs now represent hope and resilience.”
