Tezpur: Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said that NDA will win between 90 to 100 seats while Congress will get around 15 to 17 seats.

Sarma said that All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) will get five to six seats while Raijor Dal will register a win in one seat in Dhing, and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) will not not even open its account.

Both AJP and Raijor Dal are allies of the Congress party. Sarma said the Congress party manifesto which was unveiled a couple of days back has nothing to offer to the people. “Congress has written nothing in their manifesto. There is not even a single promise people can remember, no clarity on the number of jobs and no concrete steps for education”.

Sarma said the Congress would struggle to cross 20 seats in the 126-member Assembly. He said Congress politicised the late Zubeen Garg death.

Congress party in its five guarantees have promised “Garg has been murdered and within 100 days, we will provide justice.”

Sarma asserted that judicial processes cannot be influenced by political assurances. “How can a government give justice when it is the judiciary that decides? Justice is delivered by courts, not by the Chief Minister.”
He said that the government’s role was limited to filing charge sheets and ensuring that the accused remain in custody. “Not a single accused has come out. That is BJP’s credit,” he said.Sarma also questioned the Congress’s record in delivering justice in past cases. “If they could deliver justice so quickly, why did it take years in cases like the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi?” he asked.

Recently, the Singapore coroner’s court had ruled that Garg’s death was due to accidental drowning. Earlier, the Police Coast Guard (PCG) had stated that there was no foul play involved. This stoked a political debate in Assam.

Sarma had, on November 25, 2025, informed the Assam Legislative Assembly that Garg was murdered in Singapore. “It was a plain and simple murder.”

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore on September 19 last year, leaving fans across the region in shock. Durga Puja and Diwali celebrations were low key as the state was mourning his death. Garg died under mysterious circumstances in Singapore. There were protests and demands seeking justice for Garg.

Meanwhile fourteen per cent of candidates contesting the 2026 Assam Assembly elections have declared criminal cases against themselves, according to an analysis by the Association for Democratic Reforms (ADR).

The report is based on self-sworn affidavits of all 722 candidates, showing that 102 candidates have declared criminal cases, while 82 candidates or 11%, face serious criminal charges.

In comparison, during the 2021 Assam Assembly elections, 138 out of 941 candidates (15%) had declared criminal cases, while 109 candidates (12%) faced serious charges.
