Dibrugarh: Assam governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya visited the Nagaghuli Ghat along the Brahmaputra in Dibrugarh on Wednesday as part of his ongoing tour of the district and reviewed flood control and erosion prevention measures.Acharya held detailed discussions with water resources department officials on the maintenance and long-term sustainability of the riverbank erosion control and flood mitigation projects being implemented in the area. He also inspected the geo-bag projects along the riverbank to control erosion, examining the on-ground execution and effectiveness of the work.He said under the initiatives of the state govt, extensive work has been undertaken across Assam to strengthen flood management infrastructure and prevent riverbank erosion, which remains a persistent challenge for communities along the Brahmaputra and its tributaries. He acknowledged the efforts of the water resources department in carrying forward these projects and stressed the need for continued vigilance and upkeep to ensure durability.The governor proposed planting trees along the embankments to improve environmental sustainability and provide additional reinforcement to the riverbank structures over time. He also proposed improving tourism facilities at the site, citing its potential as a local attraction that could draw visitors and boost the region’s profile. He observed that such development could go hand in hand with the area’s flood protection infrastructure.Acharya said developing the ghat as a tourist site could create employment opportunities for local youth through tourism and related activities, supporting socio-economic development in the district.Senior officials from the district administration and the water resources department were present during the Governor’s visit and briefed him on the progress of ongoing works as well as future plans for the area.
