Patna: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) was suspended and a home guard removed from duty for six months after an inquiry found that they assaulted a tea vendor during a dispute over payment for tea in Bakhtiyarpur area of Patna. The action was taken after a video of the incident surfaced on social media and was brought to the attention of Patna Rural SP Kundan Kumar on Aug 2.According to police, a departmental inquiry conducted by Barh-II SDPO Ayush Shrivastava included an examination of CCTV footage, inspection of the spot and statements of those connected with the incident. The probe found that a dispute had broken out between a police patrol team and the owner of a tea stall near NH-31 on the night of Aug 1 over payment for tea.During the altercation, ASI Sanjay Kumar and home guard Ankit Kumar allegedly grabbed the shopkeeper by the collar and assaulted him.Patna Rural SP Kundan Kumar said the conduct of the two personnel was found to be detrimental to the image and dignity of the police force. Based on the inquiry report, ASI Sanjay Kumar was suspended with immediate effect and attached to the New Police Line in Patna. Home guard Ankit Kumar was removed from duty for six months. Police have also initiated departmental proceedings against both personnel.In a statement issued on Sunday, Patna Police said maintaining discipline, accountability and public trust remained among its highest priorities. The department added that strict action would be taken against any personnel whose conduct tarnishes the image of the force or undermines public confidence.Officials reiterated that police personnel are expected to uphold discipline and act responsibly while discharging their duties.
