Bettiah: An assistant sub-inspector (ASI) posted at Shikarpur police station in West Champaran district was arrested by the vigilance department on Monday while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 4,000.The accused, Upendra Vidyarthi, was caught red-handed near High School Chowk in Narkatiaganj. He was allegedly demanding money from Amrit Kumar, a resident of Hardi Tedha Pakri, in exchange for helping his father in a case related to electricity theft and facilitating its closure.According to the complaint, Vidyarthi had initially demanded Rs 8,000 as a bribe. Amrit Kumar alleged that he had already paid Rs 1,000 and was asked to pay another Rs 4,000.Vigilance DSP Satish Madhav said the department verified the complaint before laying a trap. “The allegations were found to be true during verification, after which a trap was laid to catch the accused red-handed,” he said.On Monday, the complainant informed vigilance officials that he was scheduled to hand over the money to the ASI. Acting on the information, the vigilance team deployed personnel around High School Chowk.As soon as the complainant allegedly handed over Rs 4,000 to Vidyarthi at a tea stall, the vigilance team swooped in and arrested him. The ASI was subsequently taken into custody. Officials said further legal proceedings are underway.
