Dibrugarh: A 40-year-old ASI of the Arunachal Pradesh Police was trampled to death by a wild elephant in Lohit district on Saturday morning. The victim, identified as Martin Lego, was posted at Sunpura police station, reports Rajib Dutta.The incident occurred at around 10:30am at Patthar Ghat, where Lego had gone with two friends to spend time near the river. According to police, the trio unexpectedly encountered the elephant. While the two friends managed to escape, Lego was caught and fatally attacked.
An unnatural death case has been registered at Sunpura police station. After a post-mortem examination, the body was handed over to his family at Jeko village for the last rites.Lohit district SP Thutan Jamba said preliminary medical findings indicated severe traumatic injuries. “Doctors reported broken ribs, diaphragm damage, and punctured internal organs,” he said, adding that the final post-mortem report is awaited.The SP said the elephant appeared to be injured, which may have triggered its aggression. He said no similar attacks had been reported in that area previously. “I have spoken to the deputy commissioner. An advisory will be issued asking villagers to avoid forest areas for now. The district forest officer has assured that efforts will be made to capture the elephant,” Jamba added.Tezu MLA Mohesh Chai visited the bereaved family in Jeko village to offer condolences. Lego is survived by his wife, two daughters, and a son.This tragedy marks the second fatal wildlife attack on state police personnel this month. On Feb 2, head constable Chikseng Manpang, 33, was killed by a tiger near Mayodia while riding his motorcycle from Anini to Roing.
