The number of bank fraud cases reported in Andhra Pradesh fell sharply to 522 in 2025-26 from 2,436 in the previous financial year, even as frauds involving ₹371.96 crore were reported during the year, according to Reserve Bank of India data cited by the Centre in Lok Sabha.

The state reported 3,864 bank fraud cases involving ₹174.08 crore in 2023-24. While the number of cases fell to 2,436 in 2024-25, the amount involved surged to ₹915.68 crore. In 2025-26, the number of reported cases fell by nearly 79%, while the amount involved declined by around 59% to ₹371.96 crore.

The data also shows that the number of cases and the value of fraud did not move in tandem. The highest amount involved during the three years was recorded in 2024-25, despite the number of cases being lower than in 2023-24.

In 2025-26, AP reported fewer bank fraud cases than Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Odisha. Telangana reported 638 cases involving ₹1,999.33 crore; Karnataka, 1,851 cases involving ₹1,487.09 crore; Tamil Nadu, 1,330 cases involving ₹1,995.45 crore; and Odisha 815 cases involving ₹67.74 crore.

The figures come as Andhra Pradesh steps up its efforts to strengthen the response to cyber and financial fraud. The state government has announced an integrated AP Cyber Guard framework, including a state-level cyber war room, integration with the 1930 cybercrime helpline, AI-based tools and specialised cyber units in all 28 districts and four regional hubs. A mechanism has also been proposed to alert banks quickly and freeze suspicious accounts after complaints are received.

The government has also proposed a 24/7 cyber war room and AI-based cyber monitoring to strengthen the response to digital offences.

AP reported recovery of ₹8.43 crore during 2025-26. The Centre has clarified that the recovery of fraudulently obtained money is an ongoing process involving banks, law-enforcement agencies, courts and other institutions.

The government has urged victims of financial cyber fraud to report incidents immediately through the 1930 helpline and the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal so that banks and law-enforcement agencies can act quickly to place holds on suspected fraudulent transactions.

The RBI data covers frauds reported by scheduled commercial banks and all-India financial institutions. The sharp fall in reported cases in AP does not, by itself, establish the reason for the decline or indicate that overall cybercrime has fallen in the state.
