Chandigarh: With heavy rain exposing weaknesses in civic infrastructure, incidents of road cave-ins are becoming increasingly common across the city. In the latest case, a portion of the dividing road between Sectors 33 and 45 has caved in, posing a potential risk to motorists and pedestrians.
A portion of the dividing road between Sectors 33 and 45 that caved in has been barricaded, with the damaged stretch posing a risk to motorists & pedestrians
The municipal corporation (MC) has barricaded the affected stretch to prevent accidents. Officials said the exact cause of the cave-in would be ascertained during repair work.“There may be a settlement issue at the affected corner of the road. The area has been barricaded and restoration work will begin shortly,” an MC official said.Officials are also examining whether the storm water pipeline running alongside the damaged stretch contributed to the collapse. Sources said the condition of the storm water line would be inspected during the repair process.Residents said the problem is not new and resurfaces every monsoon on the same stretch. They alleged that while damaged portions are repaired periodically, the underlying problem remains unaddressed.According to locals, cave-ins appear at different points along the road after spells of rain, raising concerns about the stability of the entire stretch. They questioned why only affected spots are repaired instead of undertaking comprehensive strengthening of the vulnerable section.Residents have urged the MC to adopt a long-term engineering solution, saying repeated patchwork repairs offer only temporary relief and continue to pose safety risks and inconvenience to commuters.
