Kanpur: The 10-day-long festival of Ganesh Puja will conclude with Anant Chaturdashi celebrations on Friday, Sept 25.Puja pandals and devotees take out colourful processions carrying Ganesh idols of all sizes for immersion in rivers and water bodies on this day.The day is also dedicated to Lord Vishnu as people perform special rituals and offer prayers to Lord Vishnu.Anant Chaturdashi will begin at 11.18pm on Thursday and will continue till 11.06pm on Friday. The auspicious time for prayers will be from 6.11am to 11.06pm on Friday. Devotees worship Lord Vishnu and wear a yellow-coloured sacred thread, ‘Anant Sutra’, on their arms. Many devotees also observe a fast on this day.

According to mythology, Maharshi Ved Vyas chose Lord Ganesh as the scribe to write down the Mahabharata. Ved Vyas recited the verses continuously for 10 days and Ganesh wrote them down without a break. After the Mahabharata was completed, Ved Vyas found that Ganesha’s body temperature had risen due to the prolonged writing. To cool him down, Ved Vyas took Ganesha to river Saraswati and bathed him. Religious traditions associate this day with the cooling of Ganesha and immerse his idol in rivers after 10 days of worship.
