Ahmedabad: The health department of the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) seized 244 kg of ‘substandard’ paneer during inspections across the city on Tuesday, as part of an ongoing drive against food adulteration and unhygienic practices.Of the total quantity, 140 kg was confiscated from Krishna Dairy in the Gota area, while 104 kg was seized from Radhe Dairy in Naroda. Officials suspect the paneer to be of poor quality and have sent samples for laboratory testing. In a parallel action, two restaurants — Bhairav Punjabi Tadka in Vastral and Punjab Di Mehak in Navrangpura — were sealed for operating under unhygienic conditions, officials said.Between April 3 and 7, the health department inspected 452 food establishments across Ahmedabad. Notices were issued to 235 units for violating food safety norms. During the drive, authorities destroyed 199 kg of inedible food items and 318 litres of inedible liquids. As part of routine checks, 188 food samples were collected, including 69 samples of paneer and 52 samples of milk products, all of which have been sent for laboratory analysis. An AMC health official said the department has intensified its crackdown on the sale of ‘analog paneer’ being passed off as genuine milk-based paneer. “Strict action will be taken against those misleading consumers under the Food Safety Act and the Gujarat Provincial Municipal Corporations (GPMC) Act,” the official added.
