Ranchi: AIIMS Deoghar successfully performed its first structural heart intervention, treating a complex congenital heart defect without open-heart surgery, it informed on Wednesday.The procedure was carried out on a 14-year-old boy suffering from patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), a congenital condition in which a blood vessel that normally closes soon after birth remains open.Doctors said the patient had an unusually large PDA, which, if left untreated, could have resulted in serious complications, including breathlessness, weakening of the heart, pulmonary hypertension and eventual heart failure.Instead of conventional surgery, the cardiology team adopted a minimally invasive catheter-based approach. During the procedure, doctors navigated a catheter to the heart and implanted a specially designed PDA occluder device, permanently sealing the abnormal blood vessel.The intervention was performed by the cardiology team led by Dr C B Pandey and Dr Smarak, with support from Dr Jyotirmay of the anesthesiology department. The patient is recovering well and is expected to return to normal activities soon, hospital officials said.
