Ahmedabad: The city civic body has filed police complaints against some residents of Vardhman Flats in Paldi after they freed stray dogs that had been captured for sterilisation and vaccination. The trouble began when the residents clashed with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) staff and workers of People for Animals, the NGO contracted to run the Animal Birth Control (ABC) drive in the area.In his police complaint, Suresh Chunapati, sanitation sub-inspector of AMC’s cattle nuisance control department, said that residents “obstructed govt employees from performing their duties.”The complaint said that residents “misbehaved with govt staff and NGO employees, and forcibly released the captured dogs.”Chunapati noted in the complaint, “The residents’ actions violated ABC Rules, 2023, framed by Govt of India.”AMC confirmed in a press release that FIRs have been filed. Citing Supreme Court directives, the civic body said that orders have been issued to take “legal action against elements creating hurdles” during these essential public health drives.Sterilisation and vaccination of stray dogs are statutory duties carried out by authorised organisations to curb the canine menace, AMC said.People for Animals holds a letter from the Animal Welfare Board of India authorising it to run the ABC programme, the civic body added.
