Ahmedabad: On any given evening in the commercial pockets of Ahmedabad, cars spill onto footpaths, two-wheelers choke turning lanes, and residents negotiate their way through spaces never meant to be parking lots. Now, the AMC is signalling that this everyday disorder will no longer be tolerated. The corporation rolled out strict guidelines on Sunday that place the burden of parking squarely on property owners.“Failure to comply with these new regulations could lead to the suspension or revocation of building usage permissions, as per the provisions of the prevailing Comprehensive General Development Control Regulations-2017,” the notification stated. Under the new rules, property owners are now responsible for ensuring that all vehicles, whether belonging to residents or visitors, are properly parked within their building premises. To achieve this, buildings must appoint a dedicated person to manage parking and prevent unauthorized parking on the streets outside. To make parking easier for everyone, buildings are now required to install clear directional signage indicating available parking spaces. Furthermore, these spaces must have clearly marked parking bays. The AMC has explicitly banned parking on municipal roads, footpaths, or any public space outside building premises. The notification also addresses encroachments, strictly prohibiting the placement of goods or any other obstructions in the front margin areas of buildings. Any existing platforms, landscaping, or barriers that hinder parking on road-facing premises or open spaces must be immediately removed to make way for vehicle parking. In a significant step towards accountability, property owners will now need to submit an annual self-declaration certificate to the zonal office, confirming that their parking areas are free from any encroachments. The AMC plans to introduce an online facility for submitting these certificates in the future. To maximize parking space utilization, the AMC is encouraging buildings to share their extra parking capacity with visitors. Building chairpersons or secretaries can register their available parking by filling out a “Parking Availability and Sharing Consent Form” on the AMC’s website.
