Ahmedabad: City police on Wednesday formally operationalised the newly carved Zone-8, nearly two months after a deputy commissioner was appointed for it, while also unveiling a broader restructuring that includes three new police stations. A notification from the state home department said the city’s total number of police stations has increased from 49 to 52, citing continued urban expansion and rising population in peripheral areas. The restructuring also includes the creation of one post of deputy commissioner of police (DCP) and three posts of assistant commissioner of police (ACP), aimed at reorganizing administrative jurisdictions. Officials indicated that the changes are expected to redistribute policing responsibilities across divisions.Under the revised framework, three new divisions — P, R and S — have been introduced. The newly proposed police stations at Vastral, Motera and Sabarmati East form part of this reorganisation. Chandkheda, Motera and Sabarmati East fall under P Division, while Odhav, Nikol and the new Vastral police stations have been placed under R Division. Vatva, Vatva GIDC and Ramol police stations have been grouped under S Division. The newly constituted Zone-8 will include both R and S divisions. Police officials said the restructuring is intended to align jurisdictional boundaries with the city’s changing geography. The redistribution of stations and supervisory officers is also expected to affect workload distribution within the force. The notification follows internal assessments of policing requirements in newly developed, densely populated areas. Further administrative steps, including staffing and infrastructure arrangements for the new police stations, are expected to be carried out in due course.
