AHMEDABAD: In what was a complete disregard for their deceased father’s dignity, four sons fought over property as his body lay in repose for cremation. The incident occurred on Saturday morning at the dead man’s residence in Saraspur, leading to a delay in cremation which forced one family member to call the police. The 75-year-old deceased man had seven children, of whom two passed away earlier, leaving four sons and a daughter, all living with their respective families. As the family was preparing to take his body for cremation, an argument broke out among the four sons over division of property. The dispute escalated into a scuffle, and one of the family members called the police. A team from Shaherkotda police station arrived at the scene and stopped the conflict. The man’s final journey was delayed by about three hours due to the disagreement, a police official said, adding that the body was taken to the crematorium only after cops intervened. The conflict continued at the crematorium too, due to which the police were called again. Cops detained two of the sons to prevent further disruption. Community elders then performed the man’s final rites. Shaherkotda police inspector M D Chandrawadia confirmed the incident and said that the four brothers had fought over property, but police and community members intervened to bring the situation under control. No complaint was lodged in the case, he said.
