Gurgaon: Two Class XII students who approached CBSE hoping to recover lost marks through re-evaluation find themselves facing an altogether different problem.While scores in the subjects they sought review for went up, marks in subjects they didn’t seek re-evaluation for came down, pushing their overall result status from ‘pass’ to ‘repeat in theory’ (RT) and throwing their college admission plans into disarray, with universities starting to close applications.The two cases were reported from the same school in Faridabad and come in the backdrop of controversy around CBSE’s new online scanned marking (OSM) system, which has seen complaints from many students over evaluation discrepancies, answer-sheet issues and revised marks.One student had applied for re-evaluation only in chemistry and home science after the Class XII results were declared on May 13. The outcome initially appeared favourable. Chemistry marks rose from 42 (RT) to 52 (pass), while home science improved from 70 to 79.But when the revised marksheet arrived, the family discovered the student’s marks in mathematics — a subject for which no re-evaluation had been sought — had dropped from 46 to 40, changing the overall result back to RT.The second student faced a similar ordeal. After seeking re-evaluation only in physics and computer science, the student secured higher marks in both subjects. Yet, the revised marksheet showed chemistry marks reduced from 52 (pass) to 43 (RT), despite no request having been made for re-evaluation of that paper.The revisions altered the result status of both students of DAV Public School and jeopardised their admission prospects. Their families lodged complaints with CBSE’s regional office, arguing marks in subjects outside the re-evaluation request should not have been altered under any circumstances. They pointed out that since counselling and admission deadlines are fast approaching, the students are at risk of losing an academic year.The school has also written to the controller of examinations, seeking urgent intervention and asking the board to verify how marks in unrelated subjects were revised. The CBSE controller of examinations did not respond to calls or messages from TOI.The principal said the uncertainty has taken a severe emotional toll on both families. “The children are under immense stress. One parent told me they are not leaving the child alone even for a while because of the anxiety this has caused,” she added.The school said CBSE officials informally described it as a “policy matter”, claiming that while marks had increased where deserved, grace marks awarded earlier had been withdrawn. “We are unaware of any such policy, and no such notification has ever been issued by CBSE. If that is the basis, it should have been communicated transparently,” the principal said.She warned that unless the anomaly is corrected immediately, both students could be forced to take compartment examinations despite having secured higher marks in the very subjects they had sought to improve.The families have urged CBSE to rectify the “error” before the admission window closes, saying the issue is no longer just about marks but about safeguarding students’ futures.
