Aizawl: Even as Mizoram’s active Covid-19 cases dropped to five on Tuesday from 14 on Saturday, the state reported a spike in infections in the first week of Aug, officials of the Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP) said.Covid-19 cases resurfaced on Aug 4, when three of 32 suspected cases tested positive. On Aug 7, six more people tested positive out of 24 samples, taking active cases to 14 as of Saturday.Officials said 10 samples were tested in the last 24 hours and all were negative. With nine patients discharged, five active cases remain under treatment as of Tuesday. All recent cases have been reported from Aizawl district.Mizoram recorded its first Covid-19 case in March 2020, when a Baptist Church pastor who returned from Amsterdam tested positive. Since then, the state has tested 19,98,969 samples, reporting 2,39,789 positive cases and 734 deaths.IDSP records show eight deaths in 2020, followed by 534 deaths in 2021, 184 in 2022 and eight in 2023. No Covid-19 fatality has been reported so far this year.IDSP officials said the scientific reasons behind the early August spike are not yet clear, adding that a similar rise in May subsided within a few days.
