Prayagraj: Deserted by lover and following a botched abortion procedure, a 25-year-old woman from Phaphamau area is battling for survival at Swaroop Rani Nehru (SRN) Hospital.According to hospital and police sources, the woman got pregnant and was allegedly taken by her partner to an unqualified medical practitioner for abortion. The procedure went wrong, causing extensive damage to her uterus and intestines, leading to massive internal bleeding and infection.As her condition deteriorated, the alleged lover reportedly admitted her to SRN Hospital and disappeared. Family members were initially unaware of her whereabouts but later traced her to the hospital.Doctors said when the patient was brought in, she was in a near-collapse state and required immediate life-saving intervention. A team led by senior faculty performed an emergency surgery that lasted nearly 3 hours.Chief medical superintendent of SRN Hospital, Dr Neelam Singh, said the patient was in a critical condition and was being monitored round the clock. “She is under intensive care and had been on ventilator support. Our entire team is working continuously to stabilise her,” she said.Under supervision of assistant professor Dr Santosh Singh and a team including Dr Atreyi Saha, Dr Anamika Pandey, Dr Khalid, Dr Vivek and Dr Aditya, removed the severely damaged uterus and repaired intestinal perforations to prevent further complications.Dr Santosh Singh said, “When she arrived, the uterus was ruptured badly and intestines were perforated. Immediate surgery was the only option to save her life and though it was successful, next 48 hours remain extremely critical.” Ventilator was removed and her condition was stable, but she was critical, he added. Meanwhile, police registered preliminary inquiry and were investigating the role of the lover and the unlicensed practitioner who performed the abortion.
