Bhubaneswar: Weeks after being discharged from a de‑addiction centre, a 25-year-old man bludgeoned his father to death on Tuesday at their home in Bhubaneswar after he refused to procure drugs for him. Police said the accused showed no remorse and calmly waited for the police to arrive.The incident took place in the Chakeisiani area under Mancheswar police station limits. The deceased was identified as S Durjyodhan (55), a labour contractor. His son S Debraj, a college drop-out, has been arrested on charges of murder.According to the police, the father‑son duo, who were alone at home, quarrelled early in the morning and Debraj reportedly demanded either liquor or brown sugar, which his father flatly refused. Debraj told the police that he got further angry when his father offered him a beedi laced with a medicine which was prescribed during his rehabilitation.“In a fit of rage, he assaulted his father with a plastic pipe and then smashed his head with a stone, killing him on the spot,” ACP (zone-V) Biswa Ranjan Senapati said.The crime came to light when labourers arrived at Durjyodhan’s residence to collect work orders. They found the gate open and were horrified to see their employer lying in a pool of blood, while Debraj sat outside the room with bloodstains on his clothes. He confessed to the murder and asked them to inform the police.“When we reached the scene, the accused was seated on a chair, narrating the sequence of events without any remorse,” Senapati said. He added that neighbours often noticed Debraj’s abnormal and aggressive behaviour, possibly linked to withdrawal symptoms after his return from the de‑addiction centre a few weeks ago. According to police sources, Debraj was admitted to a de-addiction centre in the city five months ago.A senior psychiatrist, Amrit Pattojoshi, said, “Withdrawal from substances like brown sugar or alcohol can trigger intense irritability, aggression and violent impulses. If not managed with proper medical supervision and counselling, patients may lash out at family members who deny them access to substances. This highlights the urgent need for continuous monitoring and community support after discharge from rehabilitation centres.”Several labour contractors gathered at the crime scene broke down, saying they were owed thousands of rupees by Durjyodhan.
