Vadodara: In a remarkable feat of cardiac surgery, a team of doctors in Karamsad, successfully treated a 55-year-old man suffering from seven serious heart conditions through a single, complex 10-hour operation.The surgery was performed at Bhanubhai and Madhuben Patel Cardiac Centre, a tertiary cardiac care facility of Shree Krishna Hospital at Bhaikaka University after the patient was admitted with acute left ventricular failure and atrial fibrillation, a condition characterised by an abnormally fast and irregular heartbeat.A detailed medical evaluation revealed an unusually complex combination of cardiac problems. These included a critical blockage in a coronary artery, a large hole between the heart’s lower chambers, an abnormal membrane obstructing blood flow, narrowing of the pulmonary valve, severe leakage of the tricuspid and mitral valves and an enlarged heart.Given the severity and complexity of the conditions, the medical team decided to correct all the abnormalities in a single operation rather than subject the patient to multiple surgeries.The comprehensive procedure involved coronary artery bypass grafting to restore adequate blood supply to the heart, closure of the hole between the lower chambers using a patch, removal of the obstructing membrane and excess heart muscle and repair of the narrowed pulmonary valve. The surgeons also repaired the tricuspid and mitral valves to improve their functioning.In addition, the team performed left atrial appendage plication, a procedure intended to reduce the risk of blood clot formation in the heart.Dr Manish Tiwari, head of cardiothoracic and vascular surgery at the cardiac centre, said the coexistence of multiple untreated congenital heart defects, coronary artery disease and valve abnormalities in an adult patient was extremely uncommon.“Such cases require detailed assessment before surgery, careful planning and coordinated efforts by a highly experienced multidisciplinary team,” DR Tiwari said.The intricate 10-hour procedure required close coordination among cardiac surgeons, cardiologists, cardiac anaesthetists and nephrologists. The patient was also kept under intensive observation to ensure a safe and steady recovery.The anaesthesia team, comprising Dr Gurpreet Panesar and Dr Kunal Soni, played an important role in managing the patient throughout the lengthy operation and the post-operative recovery period.The patient responded well to the treatment, with no major post-operative complications reported. An echocardiogram performed after surgery showed good heart function and successful correction of the identified abnormalities. He also regained a normal heart rhythm and was taken off ventilator support within hours of the operation. His recovery progressed steadily, allowing him to begin walking on the second day after surgery.Following an encouraging recovery, the patient was discharged on the sixth day after the operation, marking a successful outcome in an exceptionally complex cardiac case.The achievement highlights the importance of comprehensive cardiac evaluation, advanced surgical expertise and coordinated multidisciplinary care in managing patients with multiple heart conditions.
