Daltonganj: A 65-year-old farmer of Khora village in Barwadeeh of Latehar district died after being stung by bees in a field on Saturday evening, health officials said.Dr Amit Kumar, medical officer of the Barwadeeh community health centre (CHC), said, “Sudeshwar Sao had suffered numerous stings, especially on his face, and was in an extremely critical condition when he was brought in. He had no pulse or heartbeat, his blood pressure was nil and his pupils did not react to light. He was also bleeding from the mouth, indicating severe toxicity. He was administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other revival measures but could not be saved.”Medical officer in-charge of the Barwadeeh CHC, Dr Anupama Ekka, said “Sao suffered severe allergic reactions and shock. Stings on the face are more dangerous than those on other parts of the body as toxic reactions are more severe when stings occur closer to the head.”Two others, who were accompanying Sao, said they were near a beehive in a field when they were suddenly attacked.Barwadeeh community health centre premises, including quarters for doctors and nursing staff, has over six beehives. At Chhipadohar railway station, authorities have put up boards warning passengers about bees and advising them not to light matches or cigarettes because smoke can agitate the insects.The state disaster management department provides Rs 4 lakh for snakebite deaths but no compensation for deaths from bee sting, sources said.
