Handwara, Sep 19: Scientists from SKUAST and the Horticulture Department are working together to control an invasive pest strain linked to leaf disease and premature leaf fall in fruit orchards across Kashmir.
Horticulture Minister Javid Ahmad Dar said the department had taken up the issue and scientific teams were working on measures to contain its spread. He said the disease was present across several horticulture hubs and could not be completely eradicated.
However, Dar said timely and properly scheduled pesticide sprays could help control the disease and prevent its further spread.
Dar made the remarks while speaking at Fruit Mandi Handwara, where he met representatives of the local fruit growers’ association and heard their demands.
The minister said the government would examine the possibility of establishing a cold storage facility at Handwara if suitable J&K HPMC land with proper connectivity was available.
He also said the demand for auction sheds and platforms at the mandi had been discussed with the concerned department. Budget provisions for the work would be considered in the coming financial year.
On crop insurance, Dar said funds had been allocated for the Weather Based Crop Insurance Scheme under the 2026-27 budget. He said revised national insurance guidelines were expected by the end of September.
According to Dar, an advisory committee constituted by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare had submitted its report on the revised insurance framework. Once the new guidelines are issued, the J&K government will initiate the tendering and implementation process.
Dar also urged farmers to use online portals to access horticulture schemes and apply directly.
On complaints regarding revenue documents, he said revenue officials had been engaged in digital and land survey work. He assured farmers that specific grievances would be taken up with the concerned authorities.
Regarding Kisan Khidmat Kendras, Dar said the centres across the region were operational and equipped. He said gaps at some locations could be linked to resignations by Krishi Udyamis and would be examined individually.
In the upcoming Assembly session, Dar said legislators would have an opportunity to raise public issues and seek answers from the government.
