Varanasi: The Varanasi Municipal Corporation has taken a strict stance on sanitation and encroachment issues in the city. During a surprise inspection of the Ramnagar zone on Saturday, Municipal commissioner Himanshu Nagpal found heaps of garbage at several places, damaged drains, and large-scale encroachments over drains and sewers.Taking serious note of the negligence, the municipal commissioner issued a show-cause notice to the Ramnagar zonal officer and directed adverse entry against the junior engineer (civil) along with deduction of 10 days’ salary of the sanitation supervisor.Nagpal reviewed cleanliness, drinking water supply, road construction, sewer overflow, encroachments, and the cleaning of drains and sewers in Ramnagar zone.

It was found that several shopkeepers and homeowners had extended their premises illegally and constructed permanent slabs over drains and sewers, completely covering them. This has not only obstructed cleaning of drains but also affected water drainage.The municipal commissioner expressed strong displeasure over failure to conduct anti-encroachment drives and the lack of repair work on damaged drains. Holding the zonal officer directly responsible, he said keeping Ramnagar clean, beautiful, and free from encroachment was his primary duty, which he did not fulfil.Nagpal also directed action against the concerned junior engineer (civil) for negligence, as damaged drains had led to waterlogging at several locations. While reviewing sanitation work, the municipal commissioner found garbage piled up at multiple spots. He expressed anger over the lack of regular cleaning and the absence of action or penalties against those dumping waste on roads.For serious negligence in sanitation work and failure to issue challans, the salary of the concerned sanitation supervisor was ordered to be deducted for 10 days.Jal kal general manager Anoop Singh, executive engineer (civil), assistant engineer (civil), sanitation inspector and other officials and employees of VMC and jal kal department were present during the inspection.
