Varanasi: A cattle smuggler was killed and another seriously injured after they jumped off the Saidpur–Balua bridge while trying to escape from police during a vehicle check in Chandauli district early Saturday. Police arrested their third accomplice and rescued 11 bovines from a pick-up van allegedly being used for cattle smuggling.Chandauli ASP Anant Chandrashekhar said that instead of falling into the Ganga, the two landed on a sand bed below the bridge and sustained serious injuries. They were immediately taken to a hospital, where Kaju Kumar (24) succumbed to his injuries. Another injured accused, Shivanshi Kumar (22), is undergoing treatment under police custody.

He said Balua police had received a tip-off about the movement of cattle smugglers. Acting on the information, police cordoned off the Saidpur–Balua bridge under Balua police station and launched an intensive vehicle-checking drive.Around 6:10 am, a pick-up van coming from the Ghazipur side reached the bridge. On spotting the police near the middle of the bridge, the driver attempted to make a U-turn, but the vehicle stalled.As police moved towards the vehicle, the three occupants abandoned it and tried to flee. Police managed to apprehend one of them, identified as Shakti Kumar (20), a resident of Tarwa in Azamgarh.
