Ahmedabad: Police on Sunday arrested a 27-year-old Rajasthan native for allegedly robbing a 91-year-old NRI at his Vasna home earlier this month. He is linked to around 10 thefts and break-ins around the city. The robbery took place on the night of March 8. Police said the NRI, whose children live in the US, had briefly returned to India for a festival. The accused was arrested from the Guptanagar area. He went to bed around 10.30pm. Around 3am, he woke up to noises from the iron safe in his room. He saw an intruder standing near the open safe holding cash that was kept inside. When the elderly man raised an alarm, the intruder allegedly assaulted him and pushed him to the floor before fleeing with the Rs 75,000. The victim later found that the main door’s glass panel had been broken and latch damaged to gain entry into the house. The victim informed relatives the next morning and later approached the police to lodge a complaint.A joint team of the Zone-7 Local Crime Branch, acting on a specific tip-off, detained the suspect from the Guptanagar area of Vasna and recovered Rs 30,000 in cash and a mobile phone. Police said the accused has a long criminal record, with cases of theft and break-ins registered at several police stations in Ahmedabad, including Odhav, Nikol, Krishnanagar, Bodakdev, Bopal and Vivekanandnagar. Further investigation is underway to determine his involvement in other unsolved theft cases.
