Varanasi: In a joint action of Chetganj and Ramnagar police, eight looters were arrested in an encounter along Bandargah road in Ramnagar area on Monday morning. One of the looters suffered a bullet injury in his leg in this exchange of fire with police. They had looted Rs 5 lakh cash from a jeweller in Teliabagh area on June 27.Providing details of the early morning action at a press conference on Monday, ADCP (Kashi zone) Vaibhav Bangar said that while investigating the Jun 27 loot case the police had ascertained the identity of looters with the help of CCTV footage. During call surveillance, the police received inputs regarding gathering of the looters near Bandargah road in Ramnagar area on Sunday night.A joint team of Chetganj and Ramnagar police station cordoned off the road after midnight and started combing the area, said Bangar, adding, when the miscreants found themselves surrounded by police one of them, Akash Seth ,31, opened fire on the police team. In retaliatory action by police, he suffered a bullet injury in his leg, he said.Apart from Seth of Navapura Daranagar, police also arrested Ashish Maurya of Shivrampur, Sipahi alias Vijay Yadav, Akash Yadav, Pradyumn Yadav, Govind Maurya, Amit Kumar and Javed Akhtar, he said, adding, after recovering the entire looted amount of Rs 5 lakh, and seizing a pistol, cartridges, a car used in the incident and a motorbike, police took Seth to the hospital.On Jun 27, the jeweller was returning home with his friend on a scooty after borrowing money from some persons in Nadesar area. When they were passing through a restaurant in Teliabagh area, 3-4 miscreants stopped them and snatched the bag containing Rs 5 lakh cash and fled the scene. Chetganj police registered a case in this connection on Jun 28.During initial investigation of police, it came to light that Pradyumn Yadav had given information about the complainant’s movements to his associates, Govind Maurya and Ashish Maurya. The latter informed Akash Seth about it after which they executed the plan.The DCP announced a reward of Rs 25,000 for the police team for working out this case.
