Nagpur: In a heart-wrenching incident that left residents of Kamptee in shock, a 72-year-old woman was found in a critical state beside the decomposed body of her 50-year-old son in a hut near Ramabai railway crossing on the outskirts of Nagpur. The son, Suresh Bawane, is likely to have died at least 72 hours ago.The matter came to light on Sunday after a neighbour alerted the police about a strong stench coming from the house. When a patrolling constable reached the spot, he witnessed the woman lying helplessly on a cot laid adjacent to another cot on which her son was found dead. He immediately informed the New Kamptee police station, and a team rushed to the location.Locals said the woman, Lakshmi Bawane, looked extremely weak, unable to make any sound or call for help. “She was rushed to a hospital in a critical condition,” said sub-inspector Akshay Jhagde, who was present at the spot.Police said the woman could have collapsed soon had she not been rescued on time. Suresh, who ran an ironsmith shop in Kamptee, was alcoholic and suffered from acute jaundice, said sources. The body was sent for autopsy to the rural hospital in Kamptee.The police were in the process of registering an accidental death case at the time of filing this report. The incident sparked concern over the living conditions and isolation faced by elderly people in the area, said sources.
