Guwahati: At least seven people, including a child, were killed in a road accident after an ambulance collided head-on with a speeding truck in Assam’s Sonitpur district late on Sunday night, police said.Sonitpur SSP Barun Purkayastha said the victims, all travelling in the ambulance, have been identified as driver Bijoy Hensa, Hari Madgi, Kunal Karmakar, Bisesh Nath, Sanjita Nath, Sandiyashree Nath, and Samir Nath. “Six died on the spot, while one succumbed to injuries at Dhekiajuli health centre,” he added.The accident occurred on National Highway 15, about 5km from Dhekiajuli town near Rabartola (Alichinga), under Dhekiajuli Police Station.“The ambulance was transporting a patient from Tulip Tea Estate to Tezpur Medical College and Hospital when it collided with a truck, heading towards the Orang National Park area. The truck was registered in Uttarakhand,” said the traffic in-charge of Dhekiajuli PS.Police said the truck was being driven at high speed. The driver fled immediately after the crash and is currently absconding. A search operation has been launched to trace him. “We have not been able to establish any identity of the driver yet,” the officer said.The collision left several vehicles stranded on the highway during the night.
