Jamshedpur: Days after four teenagers were killed when their speeding car rammed into a stationary truck on Marine Drive, the East Singhbhum district administration has intensified its crackdown on illegal roadside parking of heavy vehicles, penalising 62 operators in two days.A joint team of the transport department and traffic police fined 45 operators of trucks, trailers and trucks parked illegally along the Pardih-Baliguma stretch of NH-33 on Monday evening. The violators were collectively fined Rs 2.5 lakh and directed to remove their vehicles.The drive continued on Tuesday when traffic police carried out inspections along the Sunsunia Gate-RD Tata Technical Institute stretch on the Burmamines-Golmuri road and fined 17 more heavy vehicle operators for unauthorised roadside parking.The enforcement campaign was launched on the directions of deputy commissioner Rajiv Ranjan and supervised by district transport officer Maheswari Prasad and DSP (Traffic) Sriniraj Kumar.“Haphazard parking of heavy vehicles on highways increases traffic pressure, causes congestion and raises the risk of accidents. It also creates inconvenience for other road users,” the DSP said.Officials said the drive would continue across vulnerable stretches to curb illegal parking and improve road safety.Apart from enforcement, teams from the transport department and traffic police are conducting awareness programmes outside schools and sensitising pick-up van drivers about traffic rules and safety norms.
