Vadodara: A 60-year-old man suffering from end-stage renal disease has been given a new lease of life after undergoing a complex ABO-incompatible kidney transplant at city-based Parul Sevashram Hospital, despite a blood group mismatch with his donor spouse.In a procedure considered among the most challenging in renal medicine, doctors successfully performed the transplant across incompatible blood groups — a barrier that traditionally restricts donor options.To make the surgery possible, the medical team employed advanced desensitisation protocols along with stringent clinical monitoring to reduce the risk of organ rejection.The case was further complicated by anatomical challenges. The donor, weighing over 100kg, had two renal arteries — an uncommon condition that required meticulous surgical planning and high surgical precision.A multidisciplinary team of nephrologists, urologists, transplant surgeons and critical care specialists carried out the procedure. Hospital authorities said both donor and recipient are recovering well, with stable graft function and no early complications reported.Experts note that while ABO-incompatible transplants carry higher immunological risks, advances in transplant science are making such procedures increasingly viable.“Procedures like these significantly expand the donor pool for patients who otherwise have limited options,” said Dr Komal Patel, medical director at Parul University. She added that the hospital is a SOTTO-approved kidney transplant centre and is empanelled under the PMJAY scheme.
