Bhubaneswar: Taking advantage of the crowd in city buses (Ama bus), a gang of six thieves that stole from passengers, was caught by Nayapalli police here on Saturday. Ten expensive mobile phones were seized from them.Police said for the past few months, an inter-state mobile theft gang from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Andhra Pradesh, Ganjam, Bhadrak, and the Bangladesh border area had been active in Bhubaneswar, stealing passengers’ mobile phones, cash, and other valuables in city buses.“To verify this information, a special police team from Nayapalli police station went on patrol today. Around 8.30 am, while patrolling near Biju Patnaik College Square, they received reliable information that six women speaking Hindi and Telugu were waiting at Jayadev Vihar bus stop for an auto-rickhshaw to go towards Master Canteen railway station, carrying stolen mobile phones and other valuables in vanity bags.

Acting on this tip, police team reached Jayadev Vihar bus stop, identified the six women loitering suspiciously and detained them,” said a police officer.During the search, six mobile phones were recovered from one Rani Singh’s vanity bag and four from Jyoti Rao’s vanity bag. “On questioning, they admitted that all the mobile phones had been stolen from different parts of Bhubaneswar, collected through pickpocketing and snatching from bus passengers,” the officer added.Police said while the women and children would carry out thefts in buses, markets, and crowded places, the male members collected the stolen goods and sold them in other states.Among the accused, Rani, 25, already had a case registered against her at Chandrasekharpur police station. Jyoti Rao, 48 had four cases registered in different police stations, while Gauri, 34 had one case against her. The other three accused were identified as Jyoti Devi, 47, K Sushila, 52, Baulama, 52.
