Chennai: Struggling to make a breakthrough in the 10-year-old girl rape case in Tiruvallur district — despite the availability of CCTV footage of the suspect — Tamil Nadu police announced a cash reward of 5 lakh for anyone giving credible information leading to his identification and arrest. An announcement to this effect was made by the Tamil Nadu police on Monday.On July 12, a 10-year-old girl, a Class IV student at a private school in her locality, was raped by an unidentified man near Arambakkam village in Thiruvallur district.“During the investigation, a suspect was identified through photographs and videos. However, the identity of the suspect is still to be established firmly. All efforts are being made by the police in this regard,” a statement from the DGP office said. It said the identity of the informant will be kept strict and confidential to protect their privacy and safety.So far, police have gathered photographs and CCTV clippings showing the man in sky-blue t-shirt standing near a roadside shop and then sitting on the floor of a moving suburban train going from Surapet towards Chennai Central railway station. However, his whereabouts remain unknown.Police suspect that the man could be from a northern state, as the child, in her statement, mentioned that the suspect spoke to someone in Hindi while the incident happened. Further, the images available with the police do not match any of the previous or known offenders in their database.The police have urged the public to come forward with any relevant information by reaching out to the Tiruvallur district police on the dedicated mobile number 99520 60948, available for calls, SMS, and WhatsApp messages.
