Bokaro: Police penalised 5,837 motorists and vehicle owners and collected Rs 79.87 lakh in fines in Bokaro district during a month-long road safety drive in July.The campaign, conducted from July 1 to 31 on the directions of SP Nathu Singh Meena, was supervised by DSP (traffic) Ajay Prasad. Police targeted offences such as riding without helmets, drunk driving, illegal parking, use of mobile phones while driving, absence of mandatory documents and unsafe vehicle modifications.Riding without helmets was the most common violation. Police booked 2,421 motorcycle riders and 2,026 pillion riders for not wearing protective headgear. Another 871 two-wheelers were penalised for triple riding.Police also took action against 1,004 motorists for not possessing valid pollution under control certificates and 531 vehicle owners for operating uninsured vehicles.During the drive, 448 motorists were fined for improper parking, 32 for not wearing seat belts, 16 for using mobile phones while driving and eight for using illegal black films on vehicle windows.“Traffic police used breath analysers at several checkpoints and detected 19 motorists driving under the influence of alcohol,” Prasad said.He said the drive was aimed not merely at collecting fines but also at creating road-safety awareness among commuters. “Enforcement was intensified at intersections, marketplaces and other busy stretches across the district,” he added.
