Udupi: Udupi Town police station personnel arrested 5 suspects in connection with an attempt to murder case, following a violent assault reported in Udupi town on Jan 30.The arrested suspects are Akshath Pai,27, from Kunjibettu; Sushanth,25, from Shivalli; Ramanand Pai,42, from Udupi; Santosh Koraga,38, from Ammunjegudde; and Shamshank Nayak,25, from Alevoor village in Udupi. They were arrested from Yellapura in Uttara Kannada on Friday. Police said a car worth approximately Rs 8 lakh, which was allegedly used in the crime, along with two mobile phones, was seized from the accused.Complainant Sharath Kundar, a resident of Chitpady Bailoor in Udupi, went for dinner around 9 pm to a restaurant in Manipal in his friend’s car. Sharath got into a verbal altercation with Akshath Pai and Shashank at the restaurant. Later, when Sharath was returning home, Akshath Pai allegedly called him and asked him to stop near PPC Cross to talk about the incident. At 11.30 pm, while Sharath and his friends were standing near PPC Cross, two SUVs arrived at the spot.Police said that Akshath Pai, Shashank, and six to seven others got down from the vehicle armed with a sword-like weapon and an iron chain. The suspects allegedly attacked Sharath, who sustained injuries on his right palm, fingers, and left wrist. Following the incident, the accused allegedly threatened the complainant with dire consequences before fleeing the scene. Sharath was admitted to a private hospital in Udupi for treatment.A case was registered at the Udupi Town police station under Sections 189(2), 191(2), 191(3), 118(2), 109, 351(2) read with 190 of the BNS.
